Why the Kursk region has become a key target for Russia - The Washington Post.

Large-scale military operation in the Kursk region
The operation to regain the Kursk region, which has become a central issue for Russia, is the main topic of discussion. The Kremlin has invested significant military resources to deprive Ukraine of an important negotiating advantage.
Russia has managed to regain control of about 40% of the Kursk region that was previously held by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. However, thanks to natural obstacles and the Biden administration's permission for the use of American missiles, Ukrainian defenders have been able to hold their positions.
I was initially skeptical about the operation, but its strategic importance has become apparent.
Commander of the 82nd Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Voloshin, stated that the offensive in the north was the only viable option, considering the strong fortifications of Russian troops in other directions.
We are facing the most combat-ready Russian units, drawn from other fronts.
Russia is using various tactics, including motorcycle groups and massive assaults. This is referred to as a 'meat assault' by the Ukrainian military.
The situation remains tense in the border areas of the Sumy region, where regular Russian shelling has forced most of the civilian population to evacuate. Many houses have turned to ruins or have been repurposed for military needs.
Despite significant losses, Russian command plans to regain control of the region. Ukrainian troops are prepared for a prolonged defense of their positions, especially with the onset of winter.
