Egypt is negotiating with China for the purchase of stealth submarines.

Egypt and China are nearing the completion of negotiations for the acquisition of Type 039A diesel-electric submarines. These submarines are distinguished by their extraordinary power and advanced air-independent propulsion system. The negotiations, which have been ongoing since late 2024, also concern technology transfer and local production. According to Tactical Report, the Type 039A submarines, which represent a significant achievement of the Chinese defense industry, could help China enhance its maritime strategy.
The Type 039A submarines were developed by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and were commissioned in 2006. They were the first submarines in China to be equipped with an air-independent propulsion system, allowing them to remain submerged for extended periods without the need to surface.
Overall, the length of the submarine is about 77.6 meters, the width is 8.4 meters, and the displacement is 3600 tons. The double-hulled body of the submarine is made of tiles that absorb sonar waves, making it difficult to detect.
These submarines have six 533-millimeter torpedo tubes that can use a variety of weapons, including wire-guided Yu-6 torpedoes and YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles with a range of over 200 kilometers. Additionally, these submarines can deploy naval mines.
For Egypt, which already possesses German and Russian submarines, the acquisition of Type 039A will significantly enhance its naval capabilities and provide better protection for the Suez Canal and gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea.
The estimated cost of one Type 039A submarine is between 400-500 million dollars, making it affordable for countries in the region with limited access to water.
If the deal is finalized, it will significantly elevate China's position as a leading arms supplier in the Middle East.
