The European Commission launches the preparation process for the 16th package of sanctions against Russia.

The European Commission starts consultations on new sanctions against Russia
The European Commission plans to start consultations with EU member states regarding the 16th package of sanctions against Russia. This was reported by Delo.ua referencing RMF FM.
On Tuesday, 'confessionals' will take place — informal consultations between the European Commission and the member states. During these meetings, ambassadors of EU countries will present their proposals, concerns, and expectations regarding the new sanctions package.
Poland, which is currently holding the EU presidency, intends to adopt new sanctions by the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine — February 24.
Based on the collected information, the European Commission will prepare a final proposal that requires the support of all EU countries.
The final draft of the sanctions is expected to be presented at the end of January or early February. Poland plays a key role in coordinating the consultations, but negotiations may be difficult considering the positions of Slovakia and Hungary, which have previously opposed tightening sanctions.
The new sanctions package is aimed at increasing pressure on Russia due to its military aggression against Ukraine. It may include additional economic, financial, and individual restrictions, depending on the views and agreements of the member countries.
Details of the 16th package will be made known after the consultations are completed and proposals are presented by the European Commission.
