The European Union is preparing new sanctions against Russia
The European Union is actively working on the adoption of the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. According to 'Hvylya', the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stated this, indicating that the adoption could take place on May 20.
'Intensive diplomacy is ongoing, but it is clear that Russia is showing no signs that it wants peace. We need to exert more pressure on Russia so that it also desires peace. We know that Ukraine has already agreed to an unconditional ceasefire over 50 days ago.'
Kallas also emphasized that the EU is discussing ways to support Ukraine in the defense sector to effectively counter aggression. The 17th package of sanctions is expected to be ready for adoption at the next meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
This comes in the context of discussions between the US and Russia regarding the restoration of Russian gas supplies to Europe.
