Neutrality does not mean indifference: Austria may join the peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

The Austrian government is considering the possibility of participating in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, reports Federal Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner.

According to the minister, the Austrian troops have experience in complex international operations and can contribute to peace in Ukraine if the need arises.

“We support Ukraine financially and humanitarianly. And, of course, we would be ready to help provide support under Article 42.7 to an EU partner that has been attacked. If it comes to that, we will certainly consider whether and how we can contribute. This could be, for example, in the form of medical and humanitarian support.”

Currently, Austria is not participating in negotiations within the Coalition of the Willing, but the minister noted that the country's neutrality is not a sign of indifference, as Austrian military forces are actively involved in international operations.

Analysis

The defense minister's statement indicates Austria's readiness to engage in peacekeeping activities in Ukraine, to support and promote security and stability in the region. This could be an important step in supporting Ukraine amid the armed conflict in the east of the country.
