Budget expenditures of Ukrainian regional centers on security and defense
The Committee of Voters of Ukraine analyzed the budget expenditures of Ukrainian regional centers on security and defense in 2024. According to the results of this study, the cities of Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, and Dnipro allocated the most funds for these purposes.
In Khmelnytskyi, 987 million UAH were spent on the security and defense sector, which constitutes 23% of the total budget of the community. Vinnytsia directed 1.25 billion UAH for defense purposes, accounting for 21% of the budget. Dnipro spent 1.7 billion UAH, or 16% of its budget for these purposes. Some other cities also allocated significant funds for defense.
According to SIPRI data, global military spending reached $2.72 trillion in 2024, an increase of 9.4% compared to 2023, marking the fastest annual growth at least since the end of the Cold War.
The intensification of geopolitical tensions has led to an increase in military spending in all regions of the world, especially rapidly in Europe and the Middle East. According to SIPRI's report, Ukrainian cities in 2024, on average, spent 11% of their budgets on defense, with a total amount exceeding 9 billion UAH. This indicates sustained support for the country's defense capabilities at the local level.
Such expenses include the purchase of equipment and technology, financial assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, support for territorial defense, and social assistance to military personnel and their families.
