Ukrainian soldiers died during a rocket strike in Olenivka

According to information from the Associated Press, among the 206 deceased Ukrainian military personnel in captivity, over 50 died as a result of a rocket strike by Russian forces on a colony in Olenivka. Another 245 military personnel were killed immediately after they surrendered.

"Violence in Russian prisons has likely been one of the factors leading to the high number of deaths among Ukrainian prisoners of war," representatives of human rights organizations stated.

Relatives of one of the 21 deceased Ukrainian prisoners of war were interviewed by journalists. Studies conducted in Ukraine have shown that some of them died from heart failure, tuberculosis, asphyxiation, and other causes.

Abuse of captives and violations of war rights

Other information indicates that one of the prisoners of war was tortured with electric current, while others showed signs of gangrene and untreated infections. The return of the bodies of deceased Ukrainian prisoners of war complicates the determination of the causes of death and the possibility of torture and inadequate medical care.

An official investigation showed that Russian troops violated norms of international humanitarian law by shooting at Ukrainian soldiers near Neskuchne. As a result of the events in Olenivka and other violations of war rights, Russia has become the subject of severe criticism from the international community.
